Announcement
25 Feb 2025
In February 2025, the U.S. President issued an executive order directing the Department of Commerce to investigate whether copper imports threaten national security. Based on the investigation's recommendations, the government may introduce tariffs, import quotas, export controls, or increased state aid to the domestic copper sector. In July 2025, the U.S. Administration announced a 50% tariff on copper imports, effective August 1, 2025, following a national security assessment under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
