In April 2025, the Australian Government, through the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, committed an AUD 1.2 billion (USD 782 million) investment in a Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, in addition to its original budget of AUD 4 billion. In January 2026, the initiative became operational.
