In December 2024, the USTR announced the initiation of a Section 301 investigation into Nicaragua's acts, policies, and practices related to labour rights, human rights, and the rule of law. On 23 October 2025, the USTR announced its determination, following a Section 301 investigation. The USTR proposed proposing retaliatory measures, including the suspension of trade benefits under the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) and the imposition of new tariffs of up to 100% on Nicaraguan products.
