In July 2025, the government of Canada announced additional measures to protect the domestic steel sector, as well as businesses impacted by the US tariffs. The package includes new tariff rate quotas on steel products imported from free trade agreement partners (excluding the US and Mexico), reduction of existing tariff rate quotas on steel products imported from non-free trade agreement partners, a new 25% surtax on imports of products from all countries (excluding the US) which contain steel melted and poured in China, as well as state aid measures amounting to CAD 1.45 billion (USD 1.06 billion) in total.
