In May 2025, the US Department of Commerce launched a Section 232 investigation into the national security implications of importing commercial aircraft and jet engines, and their parts. On 9 July 2026, the U.S. Administration issued a Section 232 proclamation concluding the investigation with a finding that imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines, and their associated parts threaten to impair national security, imposing no tariffs but directing the Secretary of Commerce and the USTR to negotiate agreements with trading partners, with a progress update due within 180 days.
