Canada: Strengthened rules of the family reunification regulation

Announcement

10 May 2013

On 10 May 2013, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced that the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) would be re-activated starting on 2 January 2014. The program was suspended in November 2011 due to a high backlog in processing. The PGP allows Canadian residents to sponsor the immigration of their children, parents and grandparents in order to facilitate family reunification. Measures such as these affect the treatment of migrants and may influence the incentive of foreigners to migrate to Canada in the first place.
