Sierra Leone: Ban on export of logs

Measure #1104 | Published 20 Jan 2010 ▲

Description

In a press release by the office of the president, a ban has been imposed on the transport and export of logs. This is in a bid to crackdown on illegal logging in the country. The press release numbered REF:OP/DF 251/300/01 said 'such unsustainable logging if left unchecked would seriously reduce the country's forest cover with wider implications for global warming, rainfall patterns, loss of biodiversity and other environmental damage.' It was also noted that trucks carrying logs damaged feeder roads and rural bridges because of the heavy loads.

During the period of the ban, the government will discuss with licensed logging companies modalities for proper conservation of the forests, reafforestation programmes and corporate social responsibility of the companies.
